Rome, often called the " Eternal City", is the Capital of Italy andtheCounty Seat of the Region of this same-named and vast metropolis. The city is undoubtedly worth a visit as it really does offer you everything: Rome is history, art, culture, leisure and entertainment, green areas......and to top all this off is the delicious food and the welcoming and friendly atmosphere that greets you. For many many people, Rome is the most fascinating city in the world.
The undisputed symbol of the Eternal City is definitely the Colosseum, famous all over the world; in fact, in 2007 it became one of the “Seven Wonders of the Modern World”. The Colosseum, in ancient times called
'Amphitheathrum Flavium', was built in the Empress Flavia's era and is the largest amphitheatre in the world.
Numerous religious buildings characterize Rome, first and foremost is the Basilica di San Giovanni Laterano – St. John Lateran Basilica, the Papal Cathedral and Mother of all the Churches in Rome and the world. The Basilica, dating back to the 4th century holds some wonderful works of art as, for example, the 'Affresco dell'Ascensione' – 'The Ascension Fresco' and the High Altar. The Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura' – St. Paul's outside the Walls - is the second largest church in Rome and inside you can admire Cavallini's mosaics, the ciborium, the Cloister and a stature of the Saint. The Sistine Chapel, built at the end of the 15th century, is where nowadays the Conclave meets when a new Pope has to be chosen; the Chapel is also very famous for Michelangelo's frescoes with his “Universal Judgement” and for other frescoes by Botticelli, Perugino and many other artists. The Basilica of St. Peter, dedicated to the Saint of the same name, is the most important church for Christians and it succeeds in uniting together both believers and art lovers. This Basilica stands inside the Vatican City: the world's smallest independent state as far as size and population are concerned. Another interesting building is the Pantheon, renowned for its dome's central opening which creates amazing effects of light inside, accentuating its beauty. The Church of the Trinità dei Monti is also another must to be seen.
